About Me

About Me
I am drawn by the stories young people know to be real, stories from which their communities politely glance away. There was always something voyeuristic about good writing to me. I think that’s why George Orwell said, “Good writing is like a window pane.” I use this blog as a place to tear apart my favorite YA books in an effort to understand how they work. Then I sit down at my laptop and try to do it myself.

Lately inspired by...

Remember

"I think we ought to read only the kinds of books that wound and stab us. If the book we are reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head then what are we reading it for? We need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into the forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be an axe for the frozen sea inside us."
--Franz Kafka - letter to Mac Broad, friend

"It has been said that closing libraries in a time of recession is like closing hospitals in a time of plague." --Lin Oliver, SCBWI Executive Director
